Coast Guard commandant Gavan receives National Order of Merit from France
Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, received the Ordre National du Mérite (National Order of Merit) in the rank of Officer from the Government of France during a ceremony held in Makati City on June 22.
French Ambassador to the Philippines Marie Fontanel presented the decoration in recognition of Gavan’s distinguished public service and contributions to strengthening maritime cooperation between the Philippines and France.
In her remarks, Fontanel cited Gavan’s role in advancing PCG modernization and his efforts in promoting maritime security and adherence to international law.
Gavan expressed his gratitude to the Government of France and emphasized that the honor reflects the collective service and dedication of the men and women of the PCG in a "Bagong Pilipinas" under President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr.
“Those of us in uniform understand that recognition is rarely the achievement of one person. Every accomplishment is built upon the work of countless others, leaders who came before us, colleagues who stand beside us, and personnel who quietly perform their duties far from the spotlight,” Admiral Gavan said.
“I accept this honor on behalf of the men and women of the Philippine Coast Guard, whose courage, professionalism, and commitment continue to inspire me every day. If this distinction recognizes anything, it recognizes their service,” he said.
The PCG Commandant also underscored the enduring friendship between the Philippines and France, recognizing that maritime cooperation between the two nations continues to deliver tangible benefits in enhancing maritime security, maritime safety, humanitarian response, and operational capability.
He mentioned the French-built BRP Gabriela Silang as a testament to the strong and growing maritime partnership between the two countries.
“France has consistently demonstrated its confidence in the Philippine Coast Guard and in the Philippines as a maritime partner. We do not take that trust lightly,” Gavan expressed. Philippine Coast Guard
