OCD says damage to infra from Mindanao quake surpasses more than one billion pesos
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) recorded more than a billion pesos worth of damage to infrastructure a week after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck provinces in Southern Mindanao.
In a press conference on Monday, OCD Deputy Administrator for Administration, Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said a total of 728 infrastructure amounting to P1.13 billion were damaged.
The death toll also rose to 65 while 36 remain missing in Davao Region and Soccsksargen.
Alejandro said no signs of life have been detected in one of the landslide areas in the municipality of Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.
"I was there yesterday at Jose Abad Santos, and in one of the areas there already, they pulled out or called off the search and rescue because it’s just so massive—it was an entire mountain that collapsed in the landslide," he said.
"It's very hard. The equipment can't make it up there so it's purely manual labor. That's why we just re-channeled our resources to other areas that are in need of relief teams," he added.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology Director Teresito Bacolcol said a total of 78 landslides were reported across the two heavily affected regions.
As of 11 am, Bacolcol said 6,144 aftershocks were recorded following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake last June 8.
Alejandro said so far 14 local government units were placed under state of calamity while 161,000 families or 624 individuals were affected in 432 barangays.
He also confirmed that the classes in the affected schools have resumed except those that are in Regions Davao Region and Soccsksargen.
"We are helping (the Department of Education) DepEd establish temporary learning facilities," said Alejandro. Robina Asido/PHS
