The Visayas grid was placed under red and yellow alert status on Wednesday due to "unavailability of Visayas’ large coal plants".

In an advisory, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that Visayas grid will be on red alert from 5 pm to 6pm and yellow alert from 2pm to 5pm and from 6pm to 8pm.

According to the NGCP, "a red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement".

On the other hand, "a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement".

It noted that the alert were declared following the "unavailability of Visayas’ large coal plants (Therma Visayas Inc.) TVI 1, TVI 2, and (KEPCO-SPC Power Corporation) KSPC 1 as well as the "limited power imports from Mindanao due to the planned outages of (GN Power Kauswagan) GNPK 4 and (Therma South Inc.) TSI 2".

The NGCP also noted that "10 plants are on forced outage in October, two plants since September, two plants since August, one plant since June, three plants since May, three plants since 2025, one plant since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021, while 18 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 804.3MW unavailable to the grid.

As of Wednesday the available capacity is only at 2,362 megawatts (MW), with its peak demand at 2,548 MW. Robina Asido/PHS
