Marcos orders mid-air collision of two PAF planes investigated
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered a thorough investigation of the mid-air collision of two Philippine Air Force (PAF) SF-260 aircraft that resulted in the death of four pilots during a training flight in Batangas last Friday, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said Monday.
"The President ordered the investigation because this is the third incident that has happened. So, the problem might be systemic. And that is something the department needs to look into," he said in an interview in Makati City.
Teodoro said so far investigators are still salvaging and preserving the remaining parts of the aircraft.
"Whether an aircraft is new or not, it can happen. Now, if the airplane experienced a mechanical difficulty, that will be found out in the investigation; maintenance records will be traced to see if there was a hiccup or not, that is part of the investigation," he said.
''It doesn't depend on the age (of the aircraft). Although, of course, the point that we also need to upgrade is valid as well. But, I don't want to preempt the investigation," he added.
In a statement, the DND said the investigation "will be conducted thoroughly and objectively to establish the facts, determine the causes, and identify any gaps that require corrective action and prevent similar tragedies".
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to their grieving families, loved ones, friends, and fellow airmen and women who share in this profound loss. Their service and sacrifice for the nation will not be forgotten," the agency added.
The mid-air collision of the two SF-260 aircraft of the Philippine Air Force occurred during a training flight at Fernando Air Base in Lipa City, Batangas at 3:51 pm last Friday.
