Two Japan-made multi-role response vessels (MRRVs) of the Philippine Coast Guard joined Japan Coast Guard’s Patrol Vessel Shikishima in an anti-piracy drill off the waters of Corregidor Island on Sunday.

The joint training exercise on anti-piracy operations that was done in coordination with the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia Information Sharing Centre (ReCAAP ISC) was participated by BRP Melchora Aquino and BRP Cape San Agustin of the PCG.

The training aimed to strengthen joint operational capabilities through practical coordination, simulated maritime security scenarios, enhanced communication, and information exchange in responding to maritime incidents involving piracy and other maritime threats.

Rear Admiral Christopher Meniado, PCG Exercise Director, emphasized that “maritime security and law enforcement against piracy are shared responsibilities among nations”.

On the other hand, ReCAAP ISC Executive Director Vijay Chafekar highlighted the importance of regional information sharing and cooperation in addressing maritime security threats.

The joint exercise concluded with a passing exercise, reaffirming the shared commitment of the PCG, JCG, and ReCAAP ISC to strengthening regional cooperation and interoperability for advancing Maritime Law Enforcement.

Shikishima also ended its three-day port visit in the country after the exercise.

Shikishima arrived in Manila last Friday after its participation in the recently concluded 24th Regional Marine Pollution Exercise (MARPOLEX 2026) with the Philippine Coast Guard in Indonesia from October 8 to 12. Robina Asido/PHS
