AFP kept watch over emergency medical evacuation of personnel on BRP Sierra Madre
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) monitored on Thursday the emergency medical evacuation of one of its personnel aboard a grounded World War II Philippine Navy ship in Ayungin Shoal.
Retired Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson for West Philippine Sea, said military personnel from BRP Sierra Madre who needed immediate medical attention had transferred to the Philippine Coast Guard ship.
"So far there is no interference. There is no interruption, it's ongoing, he was already transferred to the coast guard ship, it is still a long trip, so we are monitoring," he said. He was referring to the presence of Chinese vessels in the area.
Based on the recent monitoring of the AFP, the number of Chinese ships in the West Philippine Sea for the month of September has increased to 101 from a total of 56 Chinese Coast Guard and Navy vessels recorded from August 1 to 31, 2026.
Trinidad said the exact medical condition was not revealed but he noted that there are indicators that the case of the military personnel is similar to appendicitis.
"We are still waiting for the assessment of the doctor because he has stomach pain, vomiting and feeling weak," he noted.
"The AFP remains focused on the health, safety, and welfare of its personnel. Every necessary measure is being taken to ensure that the patient receives the medical attention and care he needs at the soonest possible time," he added. Robina Asido/PHS
