At least two students. including the suspected shooter, died and two others were injured in a shooting spree inside a high school in Zamboanga City on Tuesday.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr ordered a thorough investigation of the shooting incident, the second in two months where three students were killed in Tacloban, and come up with security and preventive measures in schools.

In a radio interview, Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Olaso said a student who wore a body camera ''was able to bring in a high powered firearm and a caliber .45 pistol'' inside the junior high school building of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University around 8 am. In a separate interview at ANC, Olaso described the suspect as an honor student.

In a statement, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the suspect, a Grade 9 student, live streamed the incident on social media.

Olaso said a video shows that the suspect first fired the high powered firearm against a teacher who was inside a classroom.

"He first fired against a teacher, but he missed. Then moved to a room, pulled out a .45 caliber (pistol), shot a student who died, and there were also others who were injured, before he committed suicide," he said.

Olaso immediately issued an order suspending classes in the university. Investigation is ongoing on how the student was able to bring the firearms inside the school.

Remulla said the suspect, whom he identified as a child in conflict with the law (CICL), died after jumping from the fifth floor of the school building following the shooting.

Pending the results of a thorough investigation, Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno immediately ordered the relief and preventive suspension of the Customs Police personnel who owed the firearms allegedly used by the student.

Nepomuceno also ordered a comprehensive accounting and inventory of all issued firearms across the Bureau and a review of compliance with all BOC policies and issuances on gun safety, firearm custody, transport, carrying, storage, and safekeeping.

The bureau required compliance reports from all concerned units within twenty-four hours.

Remulla said "the Philippine National Police (PNP) is conducting a thorough investigation to establish the motive behind the shooting, determine the ownership and source of the firearm used, and find out how it was brought inside the school campus".

"The PNP is also looking into whether there were security or procedural lapses that may have contributed to the incident," he added. Robina Asido/PHS
