A low pressure area east of extreme Northern Luzon developed into a tropical depression named ''Neneng'' on Tuesday afternoon, which could trigger renewed rainfall in areas, including Metro Manila.

Metro Manila had a reprieve from Monday's strong rain that caused flooding and traffic in many areas.

As of 5 pm, the state weather bureau said Tropical Depression ''Neneng'' at 1,025 km east of extreme Northern Luzon.

''Neneng'' has maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and gusts of up to 55 kph as it moved northwest at a speed of 20 kph.

The state weather bureau "emphasized that heavy rainfall and severe winds may still be experienced in localities outside the landfall point and the forecast confidence cone" of the tropical cyclone.

It added that ''Neneng'' is less likely to make landfall and will remain far from the Philippine landmass.

"'Neneng' is expected to be a short-lived tropical cyclone and is forecast to remain a tropical depression throughout the forecast period before weakening into a remnant low over Taiwan on Thursday (20 August)," it stated.

Although no tropical cyclone wind signal was raised, the state weather bureau said that enhanced southwest monsoon is forecast to bring 50 to 100 mm of rain in Metro Manila, La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, Rizal, and Antique until Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, 100 to 200 mm of rain is expected over Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Oriental Mindoro in the same period. Robina Asido/PHS
