KG Mercuries upset national 4x100 meter relay team, finish second in 4x400-meter relay
KG Mercuries capped its stint in the ICTSI Philippine Athletic Championships with an upset win in the men's 4x100 meter relay and a second place finish on Sunday.
Led by veteran Anfernee Lopena, KG Mercuries clocked 40.56 seconds in the 400-meter relay, trouncing Pinoy Athletics, which timed 40.57 and the national team, which finished third in 40.70.
''This is by far the fastest season-opening 4x100m relay of any team I've been part of,'' said Lopena in his Facebook post as he thanked team manager Jun Esturco.
Lopena led off and second runner Vicjardi Tapia and third runner Ralp Anthony Lego. Kent Paul Burdan anchored the team to victory.
On Sunday, the national team got back at KG Mercuries by taking the men's 4x400 meter relay.
The national team, led by Mico del Prado, son of track great Isidro del Prado, clocked three minutes and 13.25 seconds.
The KG Mercuries was second in 3:14.31 and Team España bronze with 3:18.68. PHS
