Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Romeo Brawner Jr. is not worried that the chaos in the Senate will spark unrest in the military, as he confirmed that marine troops were not part of the firefight that broke out on Wednesday night.

Despite the incident, Brawner said "Red alert was not raised."

"My instructions to the soldiers nationwide is for everyone to remain calm, disciplined, and professional. We should only focus on our jobs and leave politics to the politicians," he said.

"The armed forces are very professional, so we are not worried that what happened last night will spark something to destabilize the soldiers," he added.

The Chief of Staff also stressed that as far as the AFP is concerned, there is no indication that the incident is part of a destabilization effort, but he noted that all the possible angles are being considered in the investigation.

Brawner also confirmed that the Marine troops deployed in the Senate were not part of the shooting incident.

"We spoke with the commander. They didn't fire because they were there to support. So it was the OSSA (Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms) that fired," he said.

"Their duty is to secure the facility... not the security of an individual senator... They are from the Marine Security and Escort Group (MSEG)," he added. Robina Asido/PHS
