Over P6 million worth of crops, livestock lost, damaged from Mayon's ashfall, says DA
Over six million pesos worth of damage and losses were recorded in high value crops and livestock that were affected by the recent activities of Mayon Volcano, said the Department of Agriculture (DA) Bicol regional office.
Based on its latest report, the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) said the area covered by the ashfall is "around half the size" of the largest city in Metro Manila.
"Based on the analysis, at least 8,544 hectares were covered by ashfall. For comparison, this area is around half the size of Quezon City," it stated.
The department noted that 33 heads of chicken, cattle and carabao amounting to P121,000 were affected while 16 hectares (ha) of agricultural areas, and volume of production loss at 84 metric tons which is equivalent to P6.51 million were damaged due to the massive ashfall.
The damage and losses reported in high value crops and livestock reached P6.64 million which also affected 62 farmers.
"Additional damage and losses are expected as assessment is on-going in areas affected by the Mayon Volcanic Activity," the agency stated.
As of Wednesday, Mayon Volcano remained under Alert Level 3 with 2,184 tonnes of sulfur dioxide recorded on May 5, 2026.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) also recorded 11 volcanic earthquakes including 3 volcanic tremors, 283 rockfall events and 17 pyroclastic density current signals. Robina Asido/PHS
