MPD denies Japanese robbed in Chinatown

301 words||英字

The Manila Police District (MPD) denied the alleged robbery incident against a Japanese national along the street in Chinatown last April 25.

Major Philipp Ines, Manila Police District spokesman, said: "Following a thorough investigation and verification process, the MPD informs the public that no robbery incident occurred in the said area."

"In the interest of transparency, the investigator handling the case, initiated and conducted a parallel investigation in the Binondo area. Coordinating with local authorities resulted in the issuance of Barangay Certification confirming that no robbery incident occurred on April 25, 2026," he added.

Ines noted that "a comprehensive review of available CCTV footage within the vicinity and the relevant time frame showed no indication of any robbery incident. Neither the alleged incident nor the described individuals appeared in any recordings."

Late last month, the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines warned its citizens to be vigilant, and urged Japanese tourists, residents and travelers in the country to prioritize their safety and never resist if they are robbed.

The warning was issued, after the alleged robbery incident in the Binondo area was reported.

According to the Embassy, the victim was walking along the Chinatown area when a suspect pointed a handgun at the victim who was ordered to hand over valuables.

After the victim handed over the belongings, the suspect reportedly escaped on a motorcycle driven by another person who was waiting nearby.

After denying the alleged incident, "the MPD reiterates that the streets of Binondo and the entire city remain safe for residents, workers, and tourists alike."

"The MPD remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining peace and order and assuring public safety," said Ines.

"The public is encouraged to remain vigilant while being assumed that Manila continues to be a secure and welcoming destination for all," he added. Robina Asido/PHS
