A transport group cut its planned three-day strike for Tuesday and Wednesday following a meeting with a transportation department official on Monday.

But another group, Piston, will hold its transport strike on Tuesday and Wednesday.

News reports quoted Manibela as saying it was ending the strike following a meeting with Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) chief Markus Lacanilao.

Manibela's strike took place as the LTFRB implemented increases in fares of jeeps and buses and flag down rate in regular taxis and TNVS (transport network vehicles services). On Tuesday, oil companies announced a reduction in pump prices, especially in diesel.

Manibela had said it is not satisfied with the fare hike as it also demanded removal of value added tax in and excise in oil products. The government two days ago suspended excise taxes on liquified petroleum gas and kerosene, both of which are used in cooking for three months.

The group also calls for oil price roll back and to junk the oil deregulation law.

"You can't even buy a piece of candy with one peso anymore, and yet all they're giving us is a one-peso fare increase," Mody Floranda, Piston National president, said in a statement.

"Our diesel expenses reaches ₱3,000.00, but the additional earnings we'll make from 200 passengers a day is only ₱200," he added.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced last Sept. 26 approval of the fare increases for buses, airport taxis, TNVSand point-to-point (P2P)buses.

The minimum fare for traditional jeepneys, will increase from P13 to P14, with an additional P2 for every succeeding kilometer while the fare for modern jeepneys increase from P15 to P17, with an additional P2.40 for every succeeding kilometer.

The new fare for the first five kilometers for Metro Manila buses now at P15 for ordinary buses with P2.49 for every succeeding kilometer and P18 for air conditioned buses with P2.98 for every succeeding kilometer.

For TNVS, the new base fares are P55 for hatchbacks, P65 for sedans, P75 for AUVs/SUVs, and P165 for premium vehicles.

The provisional flag-down rates for taxis also increase to P65 for regular taxis, P80 for Premium Silver Taxi Service and P95 for Premium Gold Taxi Service. Robina Asido/PHS
