The Philippines is eyeing to send Filipino gymnastics coaches to Japan for a training camp under a program that aims to enhance teaching methods of Filipino mentors.

In a message to the Philippines Shimbun, coach Munehiro Kugimiya of the Japan Gymnastics Association (JGA) said "various people" are being consulted as sponsorship is needed to support the program.

"We need to further systematize the development of basic physical fitness and the establishment of correct form. It is urgent that we introduce a step-by-step training curriculum from early childhood and enhance regular training on coaching methods for local instructors (coaches)," he said.

"Next, we are considering a coach training system, but this will require sponsorship, so we are currently consulting with various people. We believe that training local coaches is important for the continuous development of athletes," he said.

Kugimiya explained that "the coach development program (is) designed for Filipino coaches."

"While not limited strictly to the Philippines, the program will consist of coach training camps held in Japan," he said.

"The required funding will cover the coaches' travel expenses, accommodation, training fees, and other miscellaneous costs," he added, referring to the support needed to materialize the program.

When asked for the target timeline for the implementation of the program, Kugimiya noted that "everything is subject to the available budget" from sponsors.

Kugimiya visited the Philippines last week to provide training clinics to the aspiring gymnasts in the country under the Artistic Gymnastics Age Group Developmental Program.

"My goal is to expand relationships that transcend national borders, not only in gymnastics but also through sports, where we can recognize and support each other's efforts. I believe this bond will not be limited to sports, but will develop into strong cooperative relationships in all fields in the future," he said.

"With our motto, "Nurturing the Future," in mind, we intend to cultivate the potential of the next generation through this training program and become a reliable bridge connecting the futures of both countries," Kugimiya added.

The two-day training clinic led by Kugimiya and Akiko Akena, the executive officer and chairman of the developmental committee of JGA was held at the Gymnastic Association of the Philippines (GAP) Gym in Intramuros Manila last August 20 and 22. PHS
