A member of the Naval Officer Candidate Course collapsed while undergoing officer training at the Naval Education, Training and Doctrine Command died in Olongapo City last Wednesday, a military officer reported on Tuesday.

Captain Marie Angelica Sisican, Philippine Navy public affairs office director, identified the student as Officer Candidate Aldwayne Dulnuan, a member of Naval Officer Candidate Course Class 47.

Sisican said Dulnuan collapsed after completing a scheduled five-kilometer run at Naval Station Leovigildo Gantioqui (NSLG) on July 21. Dulnuan reportedly experienced dizziness and severe chills before losing his consciousness.

"Philippine Navy medical personnel immediately responded and administered first aid at the NSLG Medical Dispensary. An initial medical assessment considered cardiac arrhythmia, heat exhaustion, and electrolyte imbalance. He was then transferred to San Marcelino District Hospital for further evaluation," she said.

"At San Marcelino District Hospital, the attending physician assessed his condition and recommended admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with a working diagnosis of heat stroke. He was subsequently transferred to Ulticare Medical Center Inc. for intensive care, where he continued to receive treatment under the same working diagnosis. His family was immediately informed and arrived at the hospital later that day," she added.

Sisican said despite receiving continuous medical care, Dulnuan was pronounced dead at 12:53 pm on July 22 due to "severe infection affecting the central nervous system, with a compromised respiratory system."

"The Philippine Navy, through the Education and Training Command, has initiated the appropriate investigative and administrative processes and is coordinating with the relevant medical authorities to establish the facts surrounding the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and based on the information available at this stage, there is no indication of foul play," she said.

"The Command maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy against maltreatment, abuse, bullying, sexual harassment, and all other forms of misconduct. Any violation of this policy will be addressed in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and institutional procedures," Sisican added. Robina Asido/PHS
