Four areas in extreme Northern Luzon were placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal Number 2 as Tropical Storm ''Kiyapo'' made landfall over an Island in Calayan, Cagayan on Friday.

The areas under signal number 2 includes Batanes, the northern portion of Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gonzaga, Santa Teresita, Camalaniugan, Aparri, Ballesteros, Abulug, Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, Claveria, Santa Praxedes, Buguey, Allacapan, Lal-Lo, Gattaran, Baggao, Lasam) including Babuyan Islands, the northern portion of Apayao (Luna, Santa Marcela, Calanasan, Pudtol, Flora), and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud, Dumalneg, Adams, Bangui, Burgos, Vintar).

Meanwhile, the rest of mainland Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, the rest of Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, the rest of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and La Union, and the northern and central portions of Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran, Dinalungan, Dipaculao) were placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal Number 1.

As of 5pm, ''Kiyapo'' with maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 105 kph was last spotted at coastal waters of Calayan Island, Calayan, Cagayan while moving west northwestward at the speed of 30 kph.

The forecast of the state weather bureau shows that "Kiyapo will continue moving west northwestward until tomorrow (25 July) over the Luzon Strait and the West Philippine Sea before turning northwestward to northward" direction.

It also noted that ''Kiyapo'' will continue to intensify while traversing Extreme Northern Luzon and may be upgraded into a severe tropical storm while or after passing the Babuyan Islands.

The tropical cyclone is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Friday night or Saturday morning.

"While moving over the West Philippine Sea, it may undergo rapid intensification and reach typhoon category before making landfall over southern mainland China. Afterwards, 'Kiyapo' is expected to weaken as it moves over mainland China," the state weather bureau said. Robina Asido/PHS
