Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Jing Quan said the incident in Ayungin Shoal where the Chinese Coast Guard faced Philippine Navy men in the area on Monday ''is against the spirit of the provisional agreement'' between the two countries.

The incident resulted in two Navymen injured. The Philippine military said they told a Chinese Coast Guard to leave Ayungin Shoal, where an old Navy ship was grounded in the shoal.

The Chinese ships took pictures and when they were told to leave, one of the Chinese Coast Guard clubbed a Navyman while another soldier was injured, the military said.

The agreement says there should be ''no new construction'' but agreed to resupplies. said Jing in an interview with reporters.

''But we found out they are doing something new,'' said Jing

'Our people found that your soldiers were building some kind of barrier nets and they are doing some kind of construction work in the ship,'' he added.

On Tuesday, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr met Jing in the Palace. Jing did not furnish details, adding that this was a private meeting. PHS
