The House prosecution sees a “striking imbalance” between Vice President Sara Duterte’s rising declared net worth and the financial records of businesses linked to her and her husband, saying the latest evidence has raised more questions about the sources of her wealth.

House prosecution spokesperson Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong said Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) records presented before the Senate impeachment court have yet to show how Duterte’s declared businesses could account for the growth in her net worth.

“Instead of clarifying, it creates more questions. And it creates, I think, more problem for the respondent to really explain to the public kung bakit ganoon, may imbalance, may striking imbalance between her net worth and the supposed lawful and legal income that she gets,” Alonto Adiong said at a post-trial press briefing Monday.

Duterte and her husband, lawyer Manases Carpio, reported a net worth of about P98.66 million in their 2025 Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN), up from about P71.66 million in 2022.

Alonto Adiong said prosecutors initially gave Duterte the “benefit of the doubt” that her declared businesses could provide legitimate sources of additional income.

“Maybe naman talaga may mga legitimate company siya. Pero nung tinignan natin ’yung mga companies niya ngayon, mismo ang SEC ang nagsabi, nalulugi naman. So paano mo ngayon balansehin?” he said.

Some of the companies examined had no audited financial statements (AFS) available in the records presented, while SEC Company Registration and Monitoring Department Director Gerardo Del Rosario testified that filings available for several others contained no information showing dividend declarations.

House prosecution team adviser and spokesperson Ace Barbers said Monday’s SEC testimony was only another “piece of the puzzle” in the prosecution’s case on Duterte’s alleged unexplained wealth.

“Kaya kailangan mabuo muna itong puzzle na ito para makita natin ’yung kabuuang larawan o picture nitong allegation na ito dito sa unexplained wealth,” Barbers said.

He said the corporate records presented so far have yet to reconcile with Duterte’s declared net worth.

“So marami pang mga witnesses and documentary evidence na ipi-presenta para magkaroon ng mas malinaw na litrato o picture itong unexplained wealth,” Barbers said.

Barbers stressed that prosecutors would not be the ones to determine whether the evidence ultimately proves unexplained wealth.

“It is not the prosecution who will decide whether the evidence that we presented are sufficient to declare that there was indeed unexplained wealth,” he said.

“We leave that up to the senator-judges to decide, base sa ebidensya na aming iniharap at ilalatag dito sa trial na ito.”

The corporate records form part of the prosecution’s evidence under Article II of the Articles of Impeachment involving Duterte’s alleged unexplained wealth. House of Representatives
