The Department of Agriculture (DA) with the support of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) started the cloud seeding operations at Magat dam over the weekend as its water level continued to decline due to El Nino.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, Col. Ma Christina Basco, PAF spokesperson, announced the successful cloud seeding operation by its weather group over the weekend.

"The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM) in partnership with the PAF successfully conducted cloud seeding operations over the Magat watershed on July 26 2026," she said.

"Through this collaboration, the PAF contributed its aerial expertise to help produce rainfall over the Magat watershed. To increase the water level of Magat Dam," she said.

"The initiative seeks to ensure adequate irrigation for agricultural lands across Cagayan Valley helping sustain proper production and mitigate the adverse effects of the prevailing El Nino condition," she added.

Basco stressed that the PAF is steadfast in supporting national government programs and will continue "to contribute to initiatives that advance food security, strengthen climate resilience and promote the welfare and sustainable development of Filipino communities."

In mid-July, the water level in Magat Dam dropped below the 160-meter critical mark.

As of July 28, the water level slightly decreased to 161.05-meter from 161.21-meter on July 27.

According to the National Irrigation Administration, "Magat Dam is one of the largest dams in the Philippines which serves as the primary water source for irrigation and provider of hydroelectric power. Robina Asido/PHS
