Gov't to tax other items to support Marcos' proposed package for business, persons: report

The government will tax other items to make make up for the losses expected with the tax package announces by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr in his State of the Nation Address on Monday.

Marcos proposed to exempt persons earning P350,000 a year from paying income tax; the present level is P250,000 and medium and small scale industries and an amnesty covering unpaid income, estate, donor's and value added taxes, among others. .

Economy, Planning and Development Secretary Arsenio Balisacan disclosed this to reportes after Marcos finished his address.

“Things like, you know, those unhealthy goods, you could increase the taxes on those, but I cannot identify them now. What the solution would be, these are still for further discussions by the Cabinet,” he said.

Balisacan did not name these items but Bilyonaryo News Channel said lawmakers could increase taxes on vape and tobacco products, sugar and sweetened products and plastics.

The TV network, quoting House ways and ,means chairman Rep. Miro Quimbo, said this could be realized in 2027.

Quimbo estimated that the loss from the proposed tax measures by Marcos could reach up to P50 billion. PHS
