Duterte rejects calls of some lawmakers that Dela Rosa should surrender to ICC
Vice President Sara Duterte rejected calls of some lawmakers for Senator Ronald Dela Rosa to surrender to authorities implementing the warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
In an interview in The Hague after visiting her father, Duterte said that the ICC warrant cannot be implemented in the Philippines.
"This is not a call from anyone, because an arrest warrant not issued by a Philippine court cannot be enforced in the Philippines," she said.
Five Senators including Francis Pangilinan, Vicente Sotto III, Panfilo Lacson, Risa Hontiveros and Bam Aquino filed a Senate Resolution urging Dela Rosa to surrender to proper authorities.
Dela Rosa was placed under the protective custody of the Senate on Monday, after he was chased by the NBI agents inside its facility to serve the warrant issued by the ICC.
As she holds the second highest position in the country, Duterte said that she is disheartened by the recent developments in the country.
"I am saddened that the personal interests of certain politicians are being put above the needs of our people and I am saddened because those who most need help during these difficult times were neglected," she said.
"It is truly disheartening that instead of standing united, we are being divided by the self-serving agendas of politicians," she added. Robina Asido/PHS
